Semiotics Preliminary Exercise 2

  Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics: During this clip it shows Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, up on stage in front of a crowd of people. It shows how she transform form her wedding dress to a dress like a mockingjay. Then it shows her husband stating how they got married in private and stating that she was pregnant and the crowd making a commotion. then all the characters in the back on the stage hold their hand and raise then as the crowd continues to make noise. 

Preliminary Exercise 1: Barthes’ Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs Semiotic Analysis Table

     The key objective of this lesson was to understand and define signs visually and by audio while analyzing a media product. Semiotics is the study of symbols/signs in our culture. Signs are the smallest components of meaning. Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist. Barthes believed that there are multiple ways to read a code and that a text has multiple meanings. He analyzed the importance process and studied the relationship between connotation and denotation. connotation convey the significance based on the context. While denotation is the original/actual meaning of a sign.      Students completed a Semiotic Analysis Table based on Roland Barthes' Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs. Students were supposed to be able to recognize and define signs (visually and audibly) when analyzing media products for the following: Characters, costumes, acting, setting, color, lighting, sound, etc. 2 students completed this Semiotic Analysis table.   The importance of studying media studies is to further understand the importance of the concept of the media. To understand both the consumer and producer part of it. To be able to work with new technologies and learn key communication theories. Personally, Social media is my favorite media product because I get to interact with people all over the world, including my friends and family. I also get to post content people can relate to or just simply have an interest in. As well as view other people's content that I am interested in. I feel that social media is engaging to others in my age group because we get to view and react to content all over the world. The most interesting thing about media studies personally is how broad the field is. before starting this class I thought it would just be about the understanding of movies but actually, it's more than that.
